I designed a book for Chris Mavraedis, who was been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease a few years ago. The project was commissioned by Chris and Bob Sockolov, a shareholder in the San Francisco Giants. Falling in Love with Baseball was supported by the San Francisco Giants and the ALS Golden West Chapter. This book is a collection of stories and emails that Chris has written over the years about his love for baseball since he began to lose his ability to speak. His stories touch on classic memories for any baseball fan; it’s truly a remarkable set of stories. I have gone through many versions to design the book, focusing on legibility and attention-grabbing images. With the help of the San Francisco Giants’ photo archive, a foreword by the manager, Bruce Bochy, and one by KNBR’s radio host, Marty Lurie, as well as quotes from past players and other Giant’s fans (see below), this book could never have been what it is today. We wrapped up the pre-production stage, where I worked with Chronicle Books to edit the design and copy to meet their standards. I have designed this book from scratch, cover to cover.
The book is available for purchase on MavoBooks.com, Amazon, or at the San Francisco Giants Dugout Store. Thank you to all who have contributed to Chris and this dreadful disease!
